Our Chakra System
Vedic scholars, centuries ago described Chakras as centres of consciousness in the body. There are seven main chakras, aligned across the spine, in the Pranamayakosha (energy body) starting from the base through to the crown of the head. Each chakra represents a duality which needs to be integrated and resolved in order to lead a balanced life.
There are 7 different types of chakras in a person’s body.
- Crown Chakra
- Third Eye Chakra
- Throat Chakra
- Heart Chakra
- Solar Plexus Chakra
- Sacral Chakra
- Root Chakra
Root Chakra

Root chakra or Mooladhara is placed at the base of the spine between the anus and the genitals. The color of the energy that it radiates is RED and it represents the element EARTH. When a chakra is unstable it makes the person feel the unstability in the characteristic that particular chakra covers. If root chakra is unstable it makes a person feel unstable, restless, lethargic,
anxious and fearful. As the characteristics of Mooladhara are emotions of survival, stability and safety so when the root chakra is stable it makes a person feel stable, confident, balanced, energetic, independent and strong.
The seed mantra (beej mantra) of Mooladhara Chakra is ‘LAM’.
The foods that help balancing it are red apples, beets, tomatoes, pomegranates, strawberries, and raspberries. All kinds of food items with red pigment color and food items high in protein are helpful in balancing the Root Chakra. The spices that suit it are chives, paprika and pepper.
Easiest way to balance the Mooladhara Chakra is to practice Hatha Yoga postures and Grounding.

Sacral Chakra

Sacral Chakra or Svadhisthana, is located at the lower abdomen, about four fingers below the navel. The color of the energy it radiates is orange and the element it represents is water.
It is characterised by its power of creation and pleasure, moved by the energy of emotions; the ‘ras’ of life. It is in this chakra that we design the life we want. So when the Svadhisthana is balanced a person feels positive, vital, creative and expressive, satisfied, and maintains good interpersonal or intimate relationships. But when the Sacral chakra is unbalanced a person might feel emotionally explosive and irritable, creatively blocked and emotionally dull.
The seed mantra (beej mantra) of Svadhishthana Chakra is ‘VAM’.
The foods that help balancing it are carrots, mango, oranges, orange peppers, peaches, apricots, and sweet potatoes. Nuts and seeds such as flax, almonds, walnuts, and sesame provide additional help. SInce the element of this chakra is water, staying hydrated, drinking plenty of water, coconut water and herbal teas are encouraged.
Staying around lakes and water bodies and being in contact of water is the easiest way of balancing the Svadhisthana
Solar-Plexus Chakra

Solar Plexus Chakra or Manipura Chakra is the third chakra located above the navel at the solar plexus. The color of the energy that it radiates is yellow and the element it represents is Fire.
It is characterised by action, confidence and courage. This is the seat of masculine energy and deals with the notion of Purusha or individual identity. When the Manipura is balanced one might feel energetic, productive, focussed and show leadership qualities. One might also develop a strong sense of physical Self.
But when Manipura is not balanced a person might face digestive problems and on an emotional level one might struggle with low self worth, lack of motivation, criticism and doubt.
The seed mantra (beej mantra) of Manipura Chakra is ‘RAM’.
The foods that help balancing it are food with yellow pigment color like bananas, pineapple and other food items like oats, brown rice, vegetables, beans. Easiest way to balance the Manipura Chakra is to start physical activities like Surya Namaskar, running, aerobics or any other exercise that involves body movement. Also Pranayama practices especially Kapalbhatti and Bhastrika are useful.
Heart Chakra

Heart chakra or Anahata, as the name implies, is located in the heart region. Its colour is green and the element is air. It connects the lower chakras to the higher ones and is very important in our spiritual healing and evolutionary development.
This fourth Chakra is the seat of balance characterised by emotions of love, joy, happiness and trust. When Anahata Chakra is out of balance a person might feel grief, lack of trust and jealousy, be over sensitive and critical. A person might have trouble forming connections and usually feel a lack of love and warmth in life. The imbalance might show not only in the persons ability to give love but also ones discomfort in receiving love. By harmonising this chakra, one might feel expansive and assured. A person becomes comfortable in expressing and holding emotions like vulnerability and pain. Feelings of acceptance, compassion, loving kindness, unconditional giving come easily and naturally.
The seed mantra (beej mantra) of Anahata Chakra is ‘Yam’.
The foods that help balancing it are green raw foods, matcha green tea, avocado, lime, mint, kiwi, spirulina and green apples.
Easiest way to balance the Anahata Chakra is to surround oneself with nature – flowers, trees, laying in the grass. Another way is to think of a very happy memory and let yourself experience the same happiness and joy again. Most days the
Chakra will respond back with a smile! It absolutely loves those truly joyful moments.
Throat Chakra

Throat Chakra or vishuddha is located at the base of the throat. The color of the energy it radiates is bright blue and the element is SPACE.
Vishuddha Chakra represents inspiration, expression, faith, and the ability to communicate. This Chakra establishes a strong connection to both verbal and body language and all levels of self-expression.
Balance of the Throat Chakra symbolises the energy of seeking
and speaking the truth. It can manifest itself by positive self-expression, constructive communication, and authenticity. When imbalanced, communication breaks down. It may lead to timidity, quietness, a feeling of constant tightening of the throat and inability to express one’s thoughts.
The seed mantra of Vishuddha Chakra is ‘HAM’.
The foods that help balancing it are blueberries and blackberries, herbal teas, raw honey and lemon.
Easiest way to balance the throat chakra is chanting the A-U-M mantra out loud. Also practices like journaling / writing helps access and understand one’s internal communication.
Third Eye Chakra

Third-Eye Chakra or Agya Chakra is located in between the eyebrows. Its element is light and the color of the energy it radiates is indigo.
Focus on the Third Eye Chakra brings more concentration and
awareness, on the external as well as one’s internal world. Its attributes are intelligence, wisdom, insight, and self-knowledge. It is the centre of perception, consciousness and intuition.
When Agya Chakra is balanced it opens the door to the Divine. It channels the energy towards universal knowledge and becomes a gateway to higher consciousness. Intuition becomes strong and equal importance is given to emotions as well as logic to make correct decisions in life.
When this chakra is out of balance, one might feel indecisiveness, confusion, lack of focus and purpose, or on the contrary, be egoistical. The imbalance of Ajna Chakra can manifest itself on a physical level by headaches, blurry vision, and eye strain.
The seed mantra (beej mantra) of Ajna Chakra is ‘Om’.
Fasting helps balance the Third eye chakra. In terms of food, purple plum, blackberry, eggplant, purple grapes, black current juice, high in omega 3 and dark chocolate help.
Easiest way to balance the Third eye Chakra is practicing meditation. Another magical way is to start being aware and noticing synchronicities around oneself. This could be in terms of numbers, dreams, shapes, objects and then reflecting what it means for you.
Crown Chakra

Crown chakra or Sahastrara is located at the crown of the head. It’s colour is violet and it activates the divine energy. The energy of the Crown Chakra is supplied by the other six chakras. This is the reason it is important to work on the lower six chakras to effectively activate the Crown Chakra.
Sahasrara Chakra is the centre of spirituality, enlightenment, dynamic thought, and energy. It allows for the inward flow of wisdom and brings the gift of cosmic consciousness.
When out of balance, one might suffer from being too withdrawn and attached to the materialistic pursuits of existence as well as stuck in their way of thinking. A blocked Crown Chakra may express itself in the unwillingness to be open to other ideas, thoughts, or knowledge. Feelings of psychosis, dissociation, disconnection, ungrounding may be signs of the imbalance.
When the Sahasrara Chakra activates, there are visible changes in our habits and attitude. The Self is no longer ruled by the ego mind. Emotions like gratitude, compassion, and acceptance become our true Self. The Universe is not perceived as ‘you ‘ & ‘me’ but rather a whole ‘us’.
The seed mantra (beej mantra) of Sahastrara Chakra is ‘Aum’.
Food is to have pure air. Naturally white foods (white asparagus, white radish), cauliflower, mushroom and pink himalyan salt.
Easiest way to balance the Crown Chakra is by working on the lower 6 chakras. Another effective way is to spend time in Meditation. Twin Hearts meditation by Master Choa Kok Sui (Pranic Healing) & Effortlessness meditation (Paroksh Yogi) are suggested.
