Answers to some commonly asked questions

Counselling is a process that helps us understand ourselves better, and develop clarity and perspective on the situation we are dealing with. It also helps us make sense of our life experiences, identify better and constructive ways of coping with our challenges, facilitate change, enhance self-esteem and discover resilience. All of these can contribute to personal growth and a deeper connection with ourselves to lead a more fulfilling life.
Counselling is for everyone, and it can be particularly helpful when things seem difficult or overwhelming. Sometimes there could be pressing concerns or burning issues that need attention. At other times, experiences from the distant past may be impacting our present experience, behaviour and relationships. At some stage, there may be a need to explore possibilities for the future, or feel more integrated and self-aware. Irrespective of the nature of the concern, counselling provides a safe place to be heard without judgement, to reflect and to develop insights.
It is also important to know that counselling is not about giving advice to fix a problem – rather, it encourages self-reflection to help the client gain clarity and empower them to cope with life challenges.
Here are a few examples that will bring clarity:
• I want to delve into deeper elements of my mind and gain a better understanding of myself. (Self Awareness and Growth sessions)
• I need help with marital or couple problems, parenting issues,
work related problems. (Challenging life events sessions)
• I am interested to explore my spiritual side (Spiritual work sessions)
• Our family is going through a crisis and I see it hugely affecting my son/daughter. They refuse to talk to me about it. (Child counselling sessions)
• I feel strong emotions of loneliness / aggression / exhaustion / helplessness / guilt and am having difficulty coping. (Mental and Emotional Health sessions)
• I recently went through / am going through a very disturbing experience. This is hindering my daily life. (Trauma and Crisis support sessions)
• I am looking for a facilitator that can help me enhance my spiritual practice (Spiritual work sessions)
• I feel a constant exhaustion and burnout. (Caregiver sessions)
• My son / daughter is exhibiting symptoms of increased aggression / is withdrawn / lost interest in things / is tensed and upset all the time. (Child counselling sessions)

The following modes are offered:
• Face to face live sessions (for locals)
• Online video sessions (mostly helpful for those seeking help from other cities)
• Telephonic sessions (mostly helpful for those who are not comfortable with / have access to gadgets)
• Corresponding via mails (mostly helpful for solution focused answers and / or for those who seek anonymity)
We usually start with a *Chemistry session, followed by *Working sessions and wrapping up with a *Closing session.
*Chemistry session is where the client introduces their narrative and the therapist welcomes them into the therapeutic alliance. We also look into paperwork, the contribution packages and other logistics. After this we both should have a better idea of how to continue.
*Working sessions are when we actually enter the therapeutic work. Each session will have a raw outline and we will deep dive into the emotions/thoughts or defences surfacing and navigate them to safety. Some sessions will be provoking while others calming. There is also independent work that is given to the client to be done in their own time. Each session will help discover insights, see various perspectives a move a step closer to healing.
*Closing session is the last session of the alliance. This is where we take stock of our objectives and needs that we discussed in the Chemistry session and see the trajectory of our journey together. In case, we decide to continue the alliance – we will not do a Closing session but keep continuing with the sessions till we mutually feel the time to close. The Closing session is always the last session.
We do a “check-in” before committing to the therapeutic alliance. It is at the end of the ‘chemistry’ session that a mutual decision is made.
The therapist checks with herself if she has the credentials, ability and confidence to reach the therapeutic goals set. And we urge our clients to do the same. Do they see the therapist as someone who can help?
We have seen too many therapy sessions go wrong and too many go right ~ and the difference always comes down to that decision. So in case you are looking for a therapist, do your own check-in (it can be with multiple therapists and that’s absolutely okay) and then decide. It is a journey unlike any other you will take, the guide is important.
